What is Truth Social, the social media app Elon Musk tweeted about

Truth Social, the social media site created by Trump Media and Technology Group after former US President Donald Trump’s much-talked about “exit” from Twitter, is back in the news. Ever since Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk spoke about Truth Social’s popularity on the micro-blogging app, many people have been wondering what Trump’s social media platform is all about.

Musk also tweeted, “Truth Social (terrible name) exists because Twitter censored free speech (sic)”. He also said it should be called Trumpet instead.

Created in February 2022, the platform is modeled on Twitter – posts are called “truths” while retweets are called “retruths”. From the outset, Trump and his team have claimed that their social media platform is both free from political censorship and allows freedom of speech.

Following his Twitter takeover, the Tesla founder and CEO said that he will use Twitter to “promote free speech”. Soon after this comment, speculation ran rife that the Twitter account of Donald Trump might be reinstated. Trump’s Twitter account was suspended last year after the Capitol riots. Trump’s Facebook account was also suspended. These are the circumstances that led to the creation of Truth Social, which is currently available via an iPhone app.
