Denver has been selected as one of three international finalists to host the 2030 Gay Games, joining Perth, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand in the race to secure this prestigious event. The announcement, made by the Federation of Gay Games (FGG), represents a significant step toward bringing the premier LGBTQ+ sporting and cultural event back to the United States for the first time since 2014.
Over the past year, the Gay Games Denver 2030 Bid Committee (GGDEN), in collaboration with Visit Denver, has crafted an inclusive and competitive proposal. The bid highlights Denver’s infrastructure, natural beauty, and commitment to diversity. Their efforts culminated in a comprehensive 100-page bid book and an in-person presentation in Washington, D.C., showcasing Denver’s promise to bring the world “Together Out West.”
"Denver is thrilled to be selected as one of three finalists to host the 2030 Gay Games XIII," said Richard Scharf, President and CEO of Visit Denver. "The Mile High City’s rich culture, world-class dining and attractions, access to nature, and commitment to inclusivity illustrate how it would be the perfect destination to attract athletes and spectators from around the world to enjoy the 2030 Games."
Broad Support Fuels Denver’s Bid
The bid’s momentum has been driven by widespread support from local leaders and institutions. Mayor Mike Johnston and Governor Jared Polis have been vocal proponents, alongside more than 50 organizations and individuals endorsing the initiative.
"Denver is the only US city to be a finalist to host the Gay Games, and I couldn’t be more ready to welcome them," said Mayor Johnston. "There’s no better place to host the Gay Games than our vibrant and inclusive city."
As Denver vies for the opportunity to host more than 12,000 participants and spectators, the GGDEN will expand its bid book, host site visits for FGG delegates, and bolster local and national support.
A Chance to Make History
If successful, Denver will bring the Gay Games back to US soil, following recent editions held in Paris (2018), Hong Kong and Guadalajara (2023), and Valencia, Spain (2026). The Games represent a celebration of inclusivity, athleticism, and culture, and could mark a pivotal moment for Colorado’s LGBTQ+ community.
